Draw me a humanist

Of course, if this portrait doesn’t match you, there’s no need to worry.
An interesting exercise, to say the least. Based on the data collected, the “ideal” humanist would be a white, French-speaking woman, around 60 years old, religious, educated, financially comfortable, and living in a rural area.
Of course, if this portrait doesn’t match you, there’s no need to worry. The purpose of the exercise is simply to highlight recurring characteristics that stand out from the data analysis.
- Women are more critical and demanding, evaluate themselves more favorably, and—proof of this observation—demonstrate better behaviors than men in 12 out of 14 cases.
- White (Caucasian) respondents are more likely than visible minorities to believe they act appropriately across the 14 behaviors.
- The same trend is observed when comparing francophones with anglophones.
- Humanist behaviors tend to improve with age.
- Almost systematically, believers display more positive humanist behaviors than atheists. It is important to consider religious beliefs beyond the institutions that represent them.
- The impact of education and income is not uniform. Their influence remains limited. In fact, the opposite is observed for behaviors tied to “values of the heart” (helping, listening, doing a good deed): those with lower education and income levels actually report better results.
- People living in rural areas generally demonstrate more positive behaviors than those in urban settings.
This profile will undoubtedly change, evolve, and become more refined as research continues. But this first draft suggests such a portrait.
