Some behaviors Pay Off more than others

The values of the heart, at the very core of the notion of humanity.

Some Behaviors Pay Off More Than Others
For the behavioral survey, together with Léger’s analytical team, we calculated the incidence rates of each of the 14 behaviors in order to understand their relative weight in how we evaluate our own humanity.

The calculations show that some matter more than others in the way we see ourselves.

This is particularly true for “heart-driven” behaviors—those tied to helping, listening, and getting involved. For example, giving one’s time has a stronger influence on how we perceive ourselves than giving money. This isn’t to downplay the value of financial donations, far from it, but the data shows that engagement and the gift of time carry greater weight in the eyes of those who give it.

A Boost for Community Organizations
The three behaviors with the greatest impact on one’s sense of humanity—helping, listening, and taking action—are at the very core of what community organizations do.

At a time when many of these organizations are struggling to survive, the data reminds us of the immense value they bring to society and to humanity as a whole. Imagine our society without them—without this safety net, too often invisible, that we ignore until the day we need it.

It is long overdue to recognize, loudly and clearly, the work they do—and to provide them with proper funding. In an internal survey by the Humanity Index, one question was specifically dedicated to community organizations: “The government should collect 1% of our salaries to better support community organizations.” On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 meaning “completely disagree” and 10 “completely agree”), respondents gave it an average score of 6.7. One might have expected worse. Taken together with the results above, this suggests the idea is far from unrealistic.
