95%. That’s pretty strong

Secondary schools, beyond what we’re being told, are actually doing a good job

95%. That’s the percentage of secondary school students who say they feel safe at their school. The question was simple: Do you feel safe at your school? 43% answered yes, always, while 52% said yes, most of the time.

A Certain Dissonance

Once again, these figures stand out and are surprising given what we say, read, or hear about safety in secondary schools. Let’s be clear: bullying, harassment, and exclusion in schools remain major issues that must be continuously addressed, but the data collected paint a less bleak and more encouraging picture, allowing us to put things into perspective. Not everything is negative—far from it. The schools make a good job.

Safety: The #1 Factor

But safety in secondary schools will never be a negotiable issue, given how strongly it influences students’ sense of well-being. Consistently, students who feel safe rate their school’s social climate more positively, their own attitudes more favorably, and all 15 behaviours they encounter on a daily basis more positively as well.

The Être Humain test for secondary schools assesses all of these aspects, provides students with immediate feedback and gives schools a complete and detailed dashboard by grade level, gender, program, and even class.
