Canada/USA: Two sides of the same coin? Yes and No

Perception is not always the reality

If we look essentially at the numbers, the answer is yes. The Humanity Index of Americans is almost identical to that of Canadians, and their evaluation of their personal humanity is even higher.

Many will be surprised, even disappointed by these results, because these numbers confront us with a reality that does not match perception. It seems clear that the idea or image Canadians have of Americans is strongly colored by their perception of the people who govern them, but the reality is clearly more nuanced.

Yes AND no

Even if the numbers are significantly the same, the calculations explaining them nevertheless contain differences. Thus, the evaluation that Canadians and Americans make of the 14 dimensions framing the Humanity Index allows us to better understand why and on what their evaluations are based.

The Americans’ evaluation is more restrictive and relies mainly on 6 of the 14 dimensions, while the Canadians’ definition casts a wider net, relying on nine of these dimensions. An article is dedicated to these differences.
